How to Get Wood Core in Valheim

Wood Core does not drop on the ground or from the regular trees in the Black Forest. To get it, you need to enter the buried crypts—the signature dungeons of that biome—and know exactly what to look for inside.

Where to Find Wood Cores

Wood cores come exclusively from Black Forest crypts. These dungeons appear as semi-hidden stone entrances among the dense vegetation of the biome. Each crypt has several rooms, and wood cores are inside the roots that block the path between chambers. Destroy those roots with any axe and each one drops one to two cores.

How many you can get per crypt varies with dungeon size, but a full clear usually yields between 5 and 15 cores. If you need more, explore other crypts in the same biome—there is no regeneration limit.

Which Axe You Need to Cut the Roots

Any axe in the game works to destroy crypt roots. A stone axe is enough, though it takes more hits. If you bring a bronze or iron axe, the process is faster. You do not need specific gear, only an axe-type tool in your inventory.

What Wood Core Is Used For

Wood core is used in several recipes unlocked at the advanced wood crafting station. The most important are the finewood bow, round wooden shield, and signpost. You also need it to build the linen spinner, which lets you work with linen and progress toward iron armor in the crafting tree.

Since wood core cannot be farmed or bought from any trader, stock up while exploring the Black Forest. Twenty-five to thirty units are enough to cover the most common recipes in the mid-game stage.

How to Prepare Before Entering the Crypts

The Black Forest is home to trolls and skeletons that can catch you off guard while you search for crypt entrances. At minimum, wear full leather armor, bring a bronze sword or mace, and food that raises your health to 75 or more. Skeletons also spawn inside crypts in numbers, so a shield helps block their hits while you finish them off.

If you play with friends on a private server, coordinating dungeon runs is much more efficient: while some clear rooms, others pick up the cores that drop. If you still need a place to play multiplayer, you can rent a Valheim server on Olimpo Hosting and explore the Black Forest with your group without depending on the host staying online.

Efficient Routes for Farming Cores

The fastest way to stock wood cores is to mark every crypt you find on the map during exploration and clear them in a loop. Once done, keep exploring the biome for new entrances. The Black Forest is procedurally generated, so on large maps there are enough crypts to gather a hundred cores or more without starting a new world.

If the Black Forest near your base is depleted, heading into unexplored areas of the same biome solves the problem. Crypts spawn fairly often on mountainous terrain in the Black Forest, which tends to lie farther from the map’s starting point.
