How to fish in lava in Terraria

Lava fishing is one of Terraria’s most rewarding late-game activities — and also one of the most misunderstood. Most players reach the Underworld, look at the molten lakes, and assume fishing there is either a joke or endgame-locked. It’s neither. With the right setup, you can cast a line into lava before you’ve touched Hardmode, and the catches are worth the effort.

This guide covers every method to fish in lava in Terraria, from the pre-Hardmode critter route to the Hotline Fishing Hook, plus what you’ll actually pull out of those glowing pools.

What you need to fish in lava in Terraria

Standard fishing gear won’t work in lava. The heat destroys regular bait, and most fishing poles simply don’t register a catch. There are three ways around this.

Lava critters as bait (pre-Hardmode, recommended starting point)

The fastest entry into lava fishing doesn’t require any quests or Hardmode progression. In the Underworld, three critters spawn that survive being cast into lava: the Hell Butterfly, the Lavafly, and the Magma Snail. Catch them with a Lavaproof Bug Net (crafted from a regular Bug Net + 15 Hellstone Bars) or a Golden Bug Net. Once one of these critters is on your hook, any fishing pole will cast into lava and produce catches.

Hotline Fishing Hook (Hardmode only)

This pole is the one most guides mention first, but it’s far from the easiest to get. It’s a rare Angler quest reward available only in Hardmode, with a reported drop rate of roughly 1 in 150 quests. Pre-Hardmode quest completions count toward this total, so doing Angler quests early isn’t wasted effort — but don’t count on seeing this pole before you’ve put significant time in.

The advantage: with the Hotline Fishing Hook equipped, any bait works in lava, including standard worms and fireflies.

Lavaproof Fishing Hook (accessory)

This is an accessory, not a pole. Equip it and any fishing pole + any bait combination works in lava. The catch: you get it from Obsidian or Hellstone Crates, which you can only obtain by fishing in lava. So you need to fish in lava before you can get the item that makes lava fishing easier. Use the critter method to get started, open crates, and eventually the Lavaproof Fishing Hook will come out of one of them.

Where to fish in lava in Terraria

You don’t have to venture deep into the Underworld and fight through everything it throws at you. A lava pool needs to be at least 75 tiles deep to register as fishable, but you can create your own. Carry a bucket, dig a chamber near safer ground, and pour lava in until you have enough depth. The Bottomless Lava Bucket makes this trivial, though you’ll need to already be fishing in lava to obtain it (it’s an Angler reward that requires lava access).

For natural pools: lava begins appearing at different depths depending on world size. In a small world it starts around 475 tiles down; in medium worlds, around 725; in large worlds, around 975. The Underworld itself has ample deep lava, though the enemy density and environmental damage demand proper fire resistance — Obsidian Skin Potions (crafted with Obsidian and Waterleaf) are the standard solution.

What you can catch fishing in lava in Terraria

Lava fishing has a distinct catch table from water fishing. The two fish you’ll be pulling up most often are:

Obsidifish — used to craft Inferno Potions (combined with Flarefin Koi) and Potions of Return. Both are genuinely useful, especially when exploring the Underworld.

Flarefin Koi — the other ingredient for Inferno Potions, which give you a ring of fire dealing 10 damage per second for four minutes. Solid crowd control in tight corridors.

In Hardmode, a third catch becomes available: the Obsidian Swordfish, which functions as a weapon with one of the highest base damage values among spears in the game.

Beyond fish, lava fishing produces Obsidian and Hellstone Crates, which can contain Hellstone Bars, rare accessories, and eventually the Lavaproof Fishing Hook itself.

Terraria fishing power in lava

Fishing Power determines catch quality and rate — the higher it is, the better your haul. Standard gear applies: the Angler Earring, Tackle Box, and Fishing Potions all boost it. The Lavaproof Tackle Bag (crafted from the Lavaproof Fishing Hook plus the Angler Tackle Bag) combines multiple fishing bonuses into one accessory slot and is worth crafting once you have the Hook.

Time of day and weather affect Fishing Power in water fishing, but lava fishing follows its own rules. Rain has no effect underground, and lava pools don’t respond to the same surface-level modifiers. Focus on gear rather than timing.

How to fish in lava in Terraria pre-Hardmode

1. Craft a Bug Net from the Merchant if you don’t have one.
2. Smelt Hellstone Bars — you need 15 to craft the Lavaproof Bug Net.
3. Craft the Lavaproof Bug Net at a workbench.
4. Head to the Underworld with Obsidian Skin Potions equipped.
5. Catch Hell Butterflies, Lavaflies, or Magma Snails with the net.
6. Find or build a lava pool at least 75 tiles deep.
7. Equip a critter as bait and cast with any pole.

That’s the entire pre-Hardmode route. No Angler quests required, no Hardmode gate, no RNG reliance beyond the critter spawns.

Lava fishing in Terraria with friends

Most lava fishing tasks — scouting the Underworld, farming Hellstone, building safe fishing platforms above lava pools — go faster with more players.
